In today's fast-paced world, ensuring the safety and security of our homes is paramount. Home security systems act as the first line of defense against potential threats, offering peace of mind and protection for you and your loved ones. However, simply installing a security system is not enough. Regular maintenance, servicing and upgrades are crucial to keeping your home security system effective and reliable.
Why regular maintenance and upgrades are essential for your home security system:
1. Optimal Performance: Over time, components of your home security system may wear out or become outdated. Regular servicing ensures that all parts are functioning correctly, from sensors to control panels and batteries. Upgrades, such as installing new technology or replacing old equipment, help enhance the performance of your system, ensuring it operates at its best when you need it most.
2. Enhanced Security Features: As technology advances, so do the capabilities of home security systems. Upgrading to newer models or adding additional features can significantly enhance your home's security. For example, integrating wireless communication options like GSM/Wifi communicators not only improves connectivity but also provides remote access and monitoring capabilities, allowing you to stay informed about your home's security status from anywhere.
3. Improved Deterrence: Visible security measures, such as LED lit bellboxes and modern keypads, serve as effective deterrents to potential intruders. Upgrading these components not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home but also sends a clear message that your property is protected by a robust security system. Burglars are less likely to target homes with visible security measures in place.
4. Reliability During Emergencies: A reliable home security system can be a lifesaver during emergencies such as break-ins or fires. Regular maintenance ensures that your system is in proper working condition at all times, minimising the risk of malfunctions when you need it most. Additionally, battery backups provide peace of mind during power outages, ensuring continuous protection for your home and family.
5. Compliance with Regulations: In some cases, home insurance policies may require homeowners to maintain a functioning security system to qualify for coverage or discounts. Regular maintenance and upgrades help ensure that your system meets or exceeds the necessary requirements, potentially saving you money on insurance premiums.
6. Long-Term Cost Savings: While investing in maintenance and upgrades may require an upfront cost, it can save you money in the long run. Regular upkeep helps prevent costly repairs due to neglected issues, while upgrades to more energy-efficient or advanced systems could potentially lead to increased property value.
Essential Components Requiring Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance of your home security system is crucial for ensuring its effectiveness and reliability. Several essential components require regular attention to keep your security system in optimal condition:
1. Bell Box and Sensors: Your alarm system's sensors detect unauthorised entry or movement within your property. Regular inspection and testing of these sensors are essential to ensure they are functioning correctly. Dust, debris, or physical damage can impair their effectiveness, so cleaning and calibration may be necessary.
2. Cameras: If you have a CCTV system or camera PIR sensors, regular maintenance includes cleaning camera lenses, checking connections, and ensuring proper positioning for optimal coverage.
3. Control Panels: The control panel serves as the command centre for your security system, allowing you to arm/disarm alarms and monitor sensor activity. Regularly inspect the control panel for signs of damage, ensure it's securely mounted, and test its functionality to detect any issues early on.
4. Access Control Systems: If your security system includes access control features such as keypads, card readers, or biometric scanners, these components require regular maintenance. Check for signs of wear, test user credentials, and update access codes or permissions as needed to maintain security.
5. Communication Devices: Communication devices such as cellular modules or landline connections enable your security system to alert you or monitoring services in case of emergencies. Regularly test these communication channels to ensure they are functioning correctly and troubleshoot any connectivity issues promptly.
6. Backup Power Supply: In the event of a power outage, a backup power supply (e.g., batteries or generators) ensures that your security system remains operational. These need to be tested regularly and backup batteries replaced as needed to prevent system failures during emergencies.
7. Software Updates: Many modern security systems rely on software for functionality and security features. Regularly updating your system's software ensures that it remains protected against potential vulnerabilities and benefits from the latest enhancements and bug fixes.

How long does an alarm service take?
Between 15 minutes to an hour depending on whether or not we need to change any batteries
How often should I get my alarm serviced?
We recommend you service your alarm annually to keep it in tip-top shape.
How often do batteries need replacing?
All alarm systems, including wired alarms require batteries. The main system back-up battery is designed to keep the system running in the event of a power outage and should (if fully charged) have enough power last for 12 hours.
However, after about 3 years, these batteries can start to falter. Thus, we advise a proactive replacement every three years. Additionally, for hybrid systems or purely wireless setups, the smaller lithium batteries powering individual detectors also have a life span of roughly 3 to 5 years. Coinciding their replacement with our servicing schedule ensures your system always remains vigilant.
Now, onto upgrades.
